Not every wedding needs an epic outdoor view, grand ballroom, or an all-day production to feel meaningful. This intimate dinner reception at Palette Tea Garden in San Mateo for S & E was the perfect example of how thoughtful design, delicious food, and intentional moments can create a wedding that feels elevated and yet completely true to the couple.

As a wedding planner in the SF Bay Area, we loved working with S & E from the very beginning of their planning journey to bring this low-key but beautifully curated celebration to life — one that honored S & E’s Chinese traditions, while embracing the venue’s modern interior and the couple’s down-to-earth priorities.

A Wedding Design That Felt Effortless, Modern, and Intentional

For the overall reception design, the Bride loved all things blue, and so we leaned into a soft blue color palette to complement Palette Tea Garden’s clean, contemporary aesthetic. The goal was to enhance the restaurant — not overpower it — using elegant textures, layered florals, and subtle details that felt refined but never stuffy.

For the tea ceremony, we shifted into traditional red and gold, honoring cultural significance and family traditions. This intentional contrast allowed each part of the day to stand on its own while still feeling cohesive.

A Meaningful Tea Ceremony, Followed by a FUn Cocktail Hour

The day began with a private tea ceremony for immediate family, creating a quiet, meaningful moment before the celebration opened up to guests.

Afterward, guests were welcomed into cocktail hour, where one of our favorite design elements made its debut: a custom photo backdrop designed with movement in mind.

The couple specifically requested something dynamic — not a large, flat wall — so we worked with an amazing company to create a custom installation featuring blue floral elements with depth and flow. The result was a backdrop that felt alive, sculptural, and incredibly photogenic, giving guests a beautiful space to connect and take photos with S & E.

A Modern Chinese Banquet with Elevated Twists

Dinner was served family-style, celebrating the communal nature of a traditional Chinese banquet — with a modern twist. Guests enjoyed a menu that felt both nostalgic and elevated, including:

Iberico cha siu
Black pepper scallop and wagyu
Truffle fried rice

As awesome as it was to see all of our hard work come to life, there truly was no better feeling than seeing S & E so radiantly happy all day!!
